Berlin by Chance

Played some more computer-generated missions. Of course it is quite another thing than following a human-generated mission and I can´t wait to play more of those. But I´ve always been fascinated by chance-generated experiences, too. A project I´ve once done together with Brian House for „Loving Berlin“ - festival was a game called Berlin by Chance. The idea of this „Berlinerkundungsmaschine“ (berlin-exploration-maschine):

No matter if inhabitant or tourist, everybody only knows parts of the vast area called Berlin. Exploring the city one usually follows some personal patterns or routes - Berlin by Chance is about fooling these patterns. It's about getting an idea of the vastness of the city by taking chance as the routeplaner.

Anyone who wants to join is sent out on expedition by a random generator. Explorers are asked to take a photograph on their journeys and contribute to a communal, pyschogeographic cartography of the city. A kind of guidebook or archive of Berlin. And a game ready to play at any time.

The assignments that are generated consist of a Berlin transit stop, walking instructions for a 15-minutes walk and directions on how to point your camera when 15 minutes are up.
